How Tae Kwon Do Has Been Empowering Women of All Ages

Woman Black Belt

It’s not uncommon for people to hear about the martial arts and immediately envision traditionally male dominated public figures, like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris, and so on. But this is a media myth – Tae Kwon Do is not only gender inclusive, there are many, many reasons that women of all ages, from teen to senior, benefit (and love!) this powerful martial art.

Physical Benefits of Tae Kwon Do

It starts with the physical benefits. The list of these benefits is fairly extensive, and we’ve written about it many times in the past right here on this blog, but some of the most popular include:

  • Improved Flexibility – Tae Kwon Do involves significant stretching and flexibility movements.
  • Improved Strength – Tae Kwon Do strengthens the body, especially the legs.
  • Improved Calorie Burn – For those that are interested in exercise but find other forms to be boring, TKD is a combination aerobic and anaerobic workout with outstanding caloric burn.

The style of Tae Kwon Do compared to other forms of martial arts is, specifically, preferred by women because it’s far more leg based. Punches exist as part of the medium, but this style of martial arts tends to fit the strengths of women’s bodies as well, as women tend to have strong cores and leg strength.

Emotional/Social/Mental Benefits of Tae Kwon Do

The physical benefits of Tae Kwon Do are important. But we would argue that it’s the emotional, cognitive, sand social benefits where TKD really thrives, especially for young women, teens, and working professionals.

Tae Kwon Do is designed to be empowering. Part of learning TKD is to learn to be loud. You are supposed to announce your power, learning to make loud “Kihap” (기합) noises (essentially shouts) to add power to your moves, but also to teach yourself to announce your power to others.

It’s also freeing. Both the structured and unstructured movements allow you to gain an understanding over your body and confidence in yourself as an athlete and as a woman. You learn self-defense movies, helping you protect yourself from those around you. You also learn to embrace your inner strength around other like-minded people, helping to build confidence.

What we teach in Tae Kwon Do is designed to have you go to school or work and speak up for yourself, embracing your power and your abilities. These are great lessons for any age, helpful for developing teens and adults that are looking for a life change.
