How Tae Kwon Do Teaches and Develops Confidence in Children and Teens
More Than Kicks and Punches: How Tae Kwon Do Builds Lasting Confidence in Kids
While there are many reasons that parents choose to put their kids in Tae Kwon Do, two reasons stand out as especially common. One is that they’re looking for a type of fitness activity that will keep their kids moving and active. The other is that they’re hoping their child will build confidence.
We hear many stories of parents that see a child struggling with self-confidence among their peers, and think that a martial arts, like Tae Kwon Do, will provide them with confidence in a way that will help them in school, with friends, and beyond.
We agree.
Tae Kwon Do absolutely can help build confidence. But it’s not just gaining strength or learning self-defense skills that build that confidence (though that can certainly help!). Tae Kwon Do actually goes much deeper.
TKD builds confidence in many ways.
Some examples include:
- Positive Environment – Here in TKD, at least in our dojang, we create a very positive environment with age-appropriate challenges and *plenty* of compliments. Children feel great and more confident when other people recognize their efforts and provide them with positive feedback.
- Clear Expectations to Meet – Children are still learning and can make mistakes and lose confidence when they are struggling to figure out what the next step is. TKD is very straight forward with clear expectations, making it easier for them to understand what’s expected and perform it accordingly.
- Visual Achievement (Belt Rankings) – One advantage of the belt ranking system is that it provides a visible sense of achievement and accomplishment, not only earning each belt but also being able to – quite literally – wear their achievement for themselves and others to see.
- Positive Social Experience – With Tae Kwon Do, they’re surrounded be peers that are viewed and treated all as equals socially and athletically. It’s a great social experience that can help those that have struggled with social anxiety. They also get a feeling of being in a group as they all progress together, increasing that feeling of social acceptance.
- It’s Cool – People are more likely to have confidence when they’re engaged in hobbies that are fun and interesting. Tae Kwon Do is cool. It’s something that they’re going to be proud of themselves for and happy to tell others about in a way that will make them feel special.
There are also the benefits of feeling physically confident as they get stronger and learn to defend themselves, along with additional possible benefits like parental pride that come when you watch them, see their belt testing, and so on.
Tae Kwon Do provides MANY benefits, with confidence being only one of several. But it is also one that many parents are looking for when they decide to pursue martial arts. See for yourself how it can benefit your child by signing up with Master P’s Tae Kown Do today.
